Volunteers serve in patient and guest roles to enhance the patient care environment and help contribute to a positive experience. Among our various locations, most volunteer roles fit into one of three categories:
- Assisting staff in patient care areas
- Providing information and service to families
- Working in clerical or office capacities

After submitting an application, a volunteer program representative near your location will work with you to determine an assignment and schedule that will be a good fit for you and meet the needs of CentraCare.
In addition to positions in the three general categories of volunteer roles, we offer positions for individuals that involve specific interests, skills or requirements. These include but are not limited to:
- Animal-assisted therapy
- Cancer care
- Hospice volunteering
- Project H.E.A.L. - help provide access to underserved populations in our communities
- Spiritual care
Assisting staff in patient care areas
Volunteers serve in patient and guest roles, enhance a positive patient care environment and help provide a superior patient experience.
In this role responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Traveling throughout corridors and public areas of facility, observant of visitors/patients in need of assistance.
- Assisting with moving people and things throughout buildings. Volunteers deliver flowers, patient mail, and packages. Volunteers in some roles transport or escort people to designated areas.
- Locating and redistributing resources throughout facility such as wheelchairs, reading material and more.
- Providing a unique perspective. Volunteers have an important point of view to share with CentraCare. One way volunteers use this to make a difference is to ensure the waiting areas, lobbies, reception desk, elevators, corridors and entrances are welcoming spaces for patients and their families.
- Interacting with patients through reading, conversing, playing games and conducting satisfaction rounds.
Providing information and service to families
Often a volunteer is the first face welcoming patients and guests to CentraCare. Volunteers uphold CentraCare values and make everyone feel welcome by providing information, directions and assistance in a friendly and courteous manner to patients and guests. Volunteers play an important role in making CentraCare feel like a caring and welcoming place.
Volunteer responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Greet guests
- Provide patient room information
- Give directions and/or provide information in person and by phone
- Assist with deliveries
- Answer incoming calls, transfer calls and take messages as needed
- Be patient, friendly, and understanding while giving patients and guests your full attention
- Help patients and guests navigate unit and facility entrances and exits
Working in clerical/office or retail capacities
Volunteers assist in our Gift Galleries and with office and clerical tasks throughout our facilities. Common responsibilities can include but are not limited to:
- Assisting customers in the Gift Gallery, fulfill retail-related tasks.
- Filing
- Collating
- Data entry
- Computer projects
- Sort/assembling packets
- Making and answering phone calls
- Assembling mailings
