Voiding Cystogram (VCUG)
A cystogram is an X-ray of the bladder, ureters and urethra.
It is used to determine whether the bladder empties completely when you urinate. It also is used to diagnose reflux (in which urine backs up to the kidneys instead of flowing out through the urethra). A cystogram may detect abnormalities such as stones, tumors or damage due to injury.
Before the Procedure
- We will be using radiation for this exam. Please notify your doctor if you are pregnant.
During the Procedure
- A catheter will be placed in your bladder.
- Your bladder will then be filled with contrast material.
- After your bladder is full, X-rays are taken.
- If you are having a voiding cystogram, X-rays will be taken as you empty your bladder.
- The exam takes about 45 minutes to complete.
After the Procedure
- Signs of bladder or urinary tract infection such as fever, urinary frequency, burning or urgency.
- Drinking extra fluids after the exam for the next 2-3 days will help decrease the chances of developing an infection.
- Your doctor will be contacted with the results of your test and will discuss the results with you within 3-5 business days.
