Uterine Fibroid Embolism
Purpose of the Procedure
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure performed by an interventional radiologist in Imaging Services. Small particles are injected into vessels feeding the fibroid tumors. This will cut off their blood supply, thus causing the fibroids to shrink in size.
Before Your Procedure
- Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your procedure.
During Your Procedure
- The radiologist will numb the site and a very small tube called a catheter will be inserted into the vessel.
- While viewing the X-ray picture on a TV monitor, a catheter will be inserted and guided to the uterine artery.
- Once the vessels feeding the fibroid tumor(s) are located, the radiologist will inject particles to block their blood supply.
- During the procedure, you will receive IV sedation and pain medications.
After Your Procedure
- Once the procedure is completed, you will be transferred to the Women’s Center on third floor.
- It is normal to stay at least 1 night after this procedure.
- Medications will be given to help decrease the normal cramping and pain that occur post-procedure.
- An interventional radiologist will see you through your hospital stay.
