What Is Iodine 131 Body Scan?
Iodine 131 Body Scan uses oral radioactive iodine to evaluate thyroid cancer patients for residual thyroid tissue.
Before the Exam
Providing safe, quality patient care is our highest priority. For the best experience please properly prepare for your appointment:
- A pregnancy test is required for ages 10-60 years unless the patient has prior total hysterectomy.
- Follow a low iodine diet as directed by your doctor.
- Certain medications cannot be taken prior to this procedure; your doctor will provide instructions to adjust your medication.
- Do not eat or drink 2 hours before Day 1 Appointment. You can eat and drink prior to Day 2 appointment.
- Day 2 appointment can also be done 7 days after therapeutic treatment.
- Do not bring children with you to your appointment. For their safety children are not allowed to accompany you in the exam room. Staff are unable to monitor children.
During the Exam
A Nuclear Medicine technologist will explain and perform the exam. The test is completed on 2 different days.

Day 1
- A capsule containing radioactive iodine 131 is given for you to swallow.
- Thyroid tissue absorbs radioactive iodine.

Day 2
- Return 48 hours after taking capsule.
- Images are taken from your head to knees with additional images over your thyroid bed.
- The appointment takes approximately 60 minutes.
After the Exam
- You may resume your normal activities.
- Increase your fluid intake unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
- The radioactive tracer used for this test is Iodine 131 in capsule form.
- A Radiologist is a doctor who reads your exam. They will get results to your ordering provider within 5 business days. Your ordering clinic will provide you with the results.
- Follow-up care is a key part of your health. Be sure to make and go to all appointments and call your primary care provider if you have questions.
