Discogram
A discogram is an exam used to determine the source of your back discomfort.
Before Your Procedure
- Do not eat for 4 hours.
- Notify your doctor or nurse if you are allergic to X-ray dye.
- Certain medications may increase your risk of bleeding and may need to be held prior to your procedure. You may resume these medications the day after your procedure unless otherwise instructed.
During Your Procedure
- You will lie on your stomach on the table.
- After numbing up your skin, the radiologist will place a needle and inject a contrast material (X-ray dye) into one or more of the discs in your back in order to elicit the discomfort you have been experiencing. This exam is diagnostic and not therapeutic.
- The radiologist may order a CT scan after the injections to visualize any disc abnormalities that become outlined by the X-ray dye.
After Your Procedure
- You should rest for the day and avoid strenuous activity.
- Notify the doctor if you experience persistent headaches, neck pain or signs of infection such as fever and redness, swelling or drainage at the injection sites.
